Air conditioning without an outdoor unit: why to avoid!

Air conditioners without an outdoor unit are popular these days. But before you are tempted to buy one, we advise you to inform yourself on the disadvantages. In this article, we briefly list why an air conditioner without an outdoor unit is a bad choice.
We explain why you should not buy an air conditioner without outdoor unit

What is an air conditioner without an outdoor unit?

An air conditioner without an outdoor unit combines all the typical parts of an air conditioner into a single unit. The installation is simple, all you need is two holes in your wall that serve as an air inlet and outlet. It is also possible that the air outlet is a hole in front of your window.

There are two types of air conditioners without an outdoor unit:

  • Monobloc air conditioner: they require a specialized installation and is placed within your wall.
  • Mobile or portable air conditioner: you can buy this air conditioner online or through your DIY store and it does not require any installation.

Why you should not buy an air conditioner without an outdoor unit or portable aircon?

Sound

With a traditional air conditioner, the motor (the compressor) is located in the outdoor unit, far away from your room. Of course, this is not possible with an air conditioner without an outdoor unit, so the compressor is placed in your room. This can be compared to a washing machine on the loudest setting, so an air conditioner without an outdoor unit is not the most ideal solution.

Energy consumption

In general, air conditioners without an outdoor unit have a higher energy consumption. The portable air conditioner scores the worst in this, followed by the monobloc air conditioner. If you still want an energy-efficient air conditioner, it’s best to choose a split air conditioner.

Smaller capacities

In general, the cooling capacity of a monobloc air conditioner is very limited. Therefore, you have less flexibility in the installation of these devices in your home.

No condensation drain

In the case of air conditioners without an outdoor unit, the condensation water must also be drained. This is usually done with a drain pan or through a pipe (hole through the wall). The latter can create ugly streaks on your walls. While if you forget to empty the drain pan, you obviously run the risk of it overflowing.

With a professional split installation, you can have your condensation drain nicely concealed in your gutters.

Limited flexibility

Monobloc air conditioners should always be placed against exterior walls. As a result, you can’t hang it on the inside walls of your house, which gives you less flexibility. In addition, they also take up about twice as much space inside.

With portable aircons you have a little more flexibility, but you still have to place them about 3 meters from a window so that the exhaust can be hung out of it.
